After a quarter-century absence, Iran returns to Iraq via Basra
In a unique and highly anticipated football event, the Iranian Football Federation has expressed its official approval to participate with all first-team stars in the international four-nation tournament set to take place at Basra International Stadium in November, marking the first time Iranian football will be present on Iraqi soil in over 25 years.
Sources close to the Iraq Football Association have confirmed a high-level agreement and coordination between Iraq Football Association President Younis Mahmoud and Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj during an official meeting in Tokyo.
Sources have indicated that the Iranian side has shown great enthusiasm and a clear commitment to participate with a squad of professional stars, confirming the sending of early administrative and logistical delegations to Al-Fayha FC in Basra to inspect the stadiums and accommodation to ensure the tournament is held with joy and exceptional organization.
The sports archive recalls that the last official appearance of the Iranian national team on Iraqi soil was on September 7, 2001, at the Al-Shaab Stadium in Baghdad for the 2002 World Cup qualifiers, which ended with Iran winning 2-1. Although they faced each other later in two matches counted on Iraqi territory, they were held outside the country in Jordan in 2019 and Qatar in 2021 due to previous international sanctions.
Training data for the Iraq national team indicates that Australian head coach Graham Arnold is preparing for a major overhaul and the introduction of new blood into the Lions of Mesopotamia squad for the tournament scheduled to take place from November 10 to 17.
Reports have confirmed that Arnold sees this tough international friendly against various football schools as a golden opportunity to test some lesser-known names and overseas professionals, and to finalize the squad ahead of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia, where Iraq plays in Group D alongside Australia, Tajikistan, and Singapore.
Iran's historic return to Iraqi pitches is a significant organizational and technical step for the Basra Four Nations Tournament, providing a highly competitive environment for Arnold and his men to assess the readiness of the Lions of Mesopotamia for the upcoming continental challenge.
