French goalkeeper and captain Mike Maignan has broken his silence following his dismissal during the match against AFC Bournemouth in the Europa League, which ended with the Rossoneri losing by three goals. His actions led to his team playing with ten men for a significant portion of the game.

Mike Maignan has stated in a message posted on his social media accounts that his actions were not intentional, explaining: "I was just trying to create space for myself inside the penalty area, as any goalkeeper would do." He added that he is aware the incident left a negative impression, especially among children and young people who follow football.

The French goalkeeper defended himself, stating that the club management, coaching staff, and his teammates know his character well and are aware that he did not intend to abandon the team or leave his colleagues in a difficult position. He then directed a veiled criticism at some media outlets, saying that they are accustomed to the interpretations provided by certain individuals and media institutions.

In contrast, AC Milan has issued an official statement condemning the serious racist abuse directed at their goalkeeper on social media, affirming their full solidarity with him and rejecting all forms of racism and discrimination, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in football stadiums or outside of them.

Although Maignan did not offer a direct apology in his message, his reference to the negative image left by his behavior reflects his awareness of the impact of the incident. While criticizing sporting mistakes remains legitimate, racist abuse is completely unacceptable and cannot be justified under any circumstances.
