Expected sanctions against Paris Saint-Germain for offensive banner against FC Barcelona
Paris Saint-Germain faces impending sanctions from UEFA following offensive banners displayed by its fans during the match against FC Barcelona at the Parc des Princes in the UEFA Champions League, as the nature of the penalties to be imposed on the French club is awaited.
According to the Spanish newspaper 'Mundo Deportivo', Barcelona have decided to file an official complaint with UEFA due to a banner that carried the phrase 'Parisian-style massacre', alongside an image of hands holding a chainsaw tearing apart the Catalan club's crest. Barcelona also complained about other banners that included offensive phrases towards the club.
The newspaper clarified that UEFA regulations stipulate punishing the use of sporting events to convey messages unrelated to sport, or any behavior that harms the reputation of football and the continental federation. The regulations also hold host clubs responsible for maintaining order and security inside and around the stadiums before, during, and after matches.
The violations that warrant punishment include the use of words, gestures, or objects to convey provocative or offensive messages that are not in line with sporting events. Clubs bear responsibility for incidents that occur during matches, unless they can prove that they were not negligent in their organization.
The Spanish newspaper confirmed that Paris Saint-Germain will face a financial penalty due to the incident, while it has not yet been determined whether the punishment will include a partial closure of the stand where the banner appeared, or a warning regarding its future closure.
