Ten Hag criticises Cristiano Ronaldo: he wasn't running with the ball or without it
Dutch coach Erik ten Hag, the former manager of Manchester United, has revealed new details about his experience with the English club, talking about his disagreements with Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo. He also criticized the club's management for what he described as a failure to keep promises and a lack of support and stability.
In an interview with The Athletic, Ten Hag stated that Manchester United's management promised him loyalty, support, and communication, but they did not uphold their commitments, adding: "They promised me loyalty, support, and communication. We discussed the issues, but they did not keep their promises." He also expressed regret over the departure of Scott McTominay, whom he wanted to keep, affirming his belief that the team was still capable of developing before his dismissal in October 2024.
Erik ten Hag continued his comments about Cristiano Ronaldo, explaining that he did not adhere to the physical demands that he wanted from him. He said: "He let the team down and let me down as well, because we based our plans on having him with us."
He added that he respected Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the best players in football history, but he had to make decisions that serve the team's interests.
Ten Hag has also criticized the work culture within Manchester United, considering that it has granted some players more influence than it should. He stated: "They continue to perpetuate this toxic culture, feeding it and giving players power," referring to the way Marcus Rashford is treated.
Despite his disagreements with the management, Ten Hag has maintained his appreciation for his time at Manchester United, having led the team to victory in the EFL Cup and FA Cup. He described winning the FA Cup in 2024 as "the most beautiful moment of my life with Manchester", but expressed his disappointment over the lack of stability and managerial support.
