Daniel Farke reaches preliminary agreement with Leeds United to extend contract until 2029
German manager Daniel Farke has reached a preliminary agreement with the management of Leeds United to extend his contract until 2029, according to The Athletic on Friday.
Some details and official procedures still need to be completed before the new contract is signed, but both parties have reached a broad understanding regarding its terms and structure. Farke's current contract with Leeds United expires at the end of the current season.
Daniel Farke has downplayed the importance of discussing his future, stating he has plenty of time to decide. In August, he said: "I don't think for a second about my contract. I am under contract, and for any manager at Leeds United, staying for three months means you are on the right track. I am already one of the longest-serving managers at the club over the last three decades. My contract ends in more than ten months, so we have plenty of time."
Ruby Evans, the club's managing director, confirmed last month the management's desire to keep the German coach, stating: "Daniel has done a fantastic job here, and we are very happy with what we have achieved over the past two seasons. We want to continue working and building within a long-term project, which is why we have been trying to reach a solution that ensures he stays with us. We have had very good discussions over the past three months, and we all agree on what we want to achieve, which is the long-term project. We have not finalized the agreement yet, but we are working towards a solution."
Daniel Farke took charge of Leeds United in July 2023 and led the team to the playoff final for the Premier League in May 2024, before losing to Southampton. However, he succeeded in guiding the team to promotion the following season, after winning the EFL Championship title with a total of 100 points.
In the last season, Leeds United finished their campaign in 14th place in the Premier League, having lost only five matches in their last 25 games in the competition. Since December 1st, the team has collected 45 points from 31 league matches, achieving the sixth-best tally among clubs in the competition during that period.
Leeds United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, having suffered just one defeat in their first six matches, which was against Arsenal, the defending champions. The team is preparing to face Manchester United on Sunday at Elland Road.
The upcoming agreement is a reward for Farke for the work he has done since his arrival, and it reflects the club's management's confidence in his ability to continue developing the team. This move is expected to enhance the technical stability and support the long-term project for Leeds United.
