Rony attacks Lisandro Martínez: His comments are disrespectful to his Manchester United teammates

Manchester United legend Wayne Rony has sharply criticized Argentine defender Lisandro Martínez following the team's loss to Atlético, stating that his public comments regarding the club's management and squad reinforcement lack respect for his teammates and could complicate matters within the team.

Manchester United suffered a defeat against Atlético with a score of 0-2 on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. This marks their fourth loss in nine official matches this season, continuing a run of five consecutive matches without a win across all competitions amid a growing sporting crisis.

Rony, during his appearance on Amazon Prime Video, stated that Martínez's remarks represent a diminishment of respect for his teammates, explaining: "I think what he said is also a kind of disrespect towards his teammates, as it undermines them when he says they are not good enough. I believe that Bruno Fernandes is the only one entitled, as the team captain, to intervene and say something like this, if you want my honest opinion. And even then, matters should be discussed behind closed doors if there are issues, which is normal."

Manchester United legend added that issues should be resolved through internal discussions among players, the coach, and management, warning that the interview will not help the club in its current situation. He also noted that the timing of the Argentine defender's statements raises questions about their motives, while Jamie Carragher criticized the timing of the player's comments via CBS, pointing to his modest start to the season.

Lisandro Martínez has publicly criticized the club's sporting management, specifically targeting technical director Jason Wilcox, for what he sees as a lack of investment and necessary signings to strengthen the team and help it compete. The Argentine defender said: "I expect more, 100%. I expect more from our technical director. We, as players, also need to give more, but it's important when building a strong squad to be ready for such matches. I have to control myself a lot, but what happened sometimes reflects the image of our club at the moment. We had a great season last year, and now we expect more from the upper management and more players capable of competing."
