Kompany: What Oles did was a stupid mistake, and I take responsibility
Vincent Kompany, the head coach of Bayern Munich, has held his team responsible for the 3-3 draw against Viking in the second round of the UEFA Champions League group stage, confirming that individual errors and a lack of focus cost the team a disappointing result.
The Belgian coach spoke about the red card received by Michael Olise, saying: "He knows he made a mistake. You can see that he is sorry for what happened and that he feels regret for letting the team down. This is completely normal; such things happen. The second yellow card that Olise received was, of course, a stupid mistake, and we talked about that very clearly."
He added: "Today’s match was not a final or a semi-final, but these are moments that can have a decisive impact on an entire season. I told him that the opponent outsmarted him. When you are much better than your opponent, sometimes all you have to do is play football and focus on proving you are the better team, rather than getting into unnecessary situations."
Kompany continued: "We cannot change what has happened now, and I hope we look back at this incident in the future as a moment from which we learned an important lesson."
Regarding the match result, Bayern Munich's coach said: "The draw was entirely our fault. We were the dominant side for the most part, just as we were in the match over the weekend. There are aspects of our performance from which we can draw positives, and the overall level of football we displayed wasn't that bad."
The coach added in his remarks: "But we continue to make mistakes in concentration, and we do not make smart enough decisions in these moments. Against Augsburg, we conceded a goal after just eight seconds, and today we conceded a goal after a minute and a half."
Vincent Kompany explained that his team did not need to build play from the back after the corner that preceded the goal, adding: "In that situation, it wasn't necessarily required to play the ball out from the back after the corner, and perhaps we could have opted for a long ball instead. We were aware of this too, but there was a degree of overconfidence."
The Belgian coach stated: "At the moment, we feel that every chance the opponent gets turns into a goal, but this is not an excuse, as we are the ones putting ourselves in these situations. What matters to me is that I do not see any lack of energy in my team. The players are working hard, and they are mentally present. However, we simply cannot afford to make such mistakes, otherwise winning matches will become difficult, even when we are clearly the better team and performing well throughout the match."
"When individual mistakes of this kind are made, and we cause them ourselves, it is natural for the final picture to look completely different. As a coach, the responsibility always falls on you. I also take responsibility for the individual mistakes made by my players."
Bayern Munich's coach concluded his statements by stressing the need to quickly correct mistakes, saying: "Against Augsburg and Viking, the energy was good, our pace of play was fast, and we created many chances. But the problem lies in the chances we allow our opponents to have, and for me, that is not enough to say we deserve to win; we need to show a reaction on the pitch, and that is the most important thing."
