Another loss for Portugal off the pitch due to Cristiano
The fallout from Cristiano Ronaldo's sudden departure from the Portugal national team camp continues, with reports revealing a noticeable drop in the number of followers on the national team's official Instagram account, coinciding with the anger and controversy that followed the recent crisis between Portugal's captain and coach Jorge Jesus.
According to reports, the number of followers on the Portugal national team's account has clearly decreased since Cristiano Ronaldo announced his departure from the camp, dropping from 24.9 million to 24.6 million followers. The account lost 83,000 followers.
These figures come amid the significant reaction triggered by Ronaldo's decision, which he announced via his official account, stating that he decided to leave the national team camp after the press conference held by Jorge Jesus, and after a conversation he had with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença.
Cristiano Ronaldo said in his statement: "After the press conference of the national team coach, and after speaking with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team camp."
He added: "At the right time, I will clarify to all the people of Portugal the true reasons that led me to leave the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself."
The captain of Portugal concluded his message by saying: "Now, it is time for me to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates in the national team, without exception."
Jésus later admitted that Cristiano Ronaldo was angry about not participating, while the coach confirmed there was no issue regarding the player's refusal to train, and that Cristiano Ronaldo was training alone in the gym.
After that, Cristiano Ronaldo missed group training, before events escalated quickly, leading to the player officially announcing his departure from the camp.
The federation confirmed that the group will continue to focus on upcoming commitments, without revealing the reasons that led Cristiano Ronaldo to leave the camp.
The crisis became evident during the match between Portugal and Norway, when Ronaldo stayed on the bench throughout the game despite participating in warm-ups, in a match that ended with Portugal winning 2-1. For its part, the Portuguese Football Federation confirmed Ronaldo's departure from the national team's camp in Copenhagen, noting that the team's preparations for the upcoming matches will continue normally with the rest of the players.
