Iraola decides on Mamardashvili's position in Liverpool's goalkeeping

Giorgi Mamardashvili is seeking more opportunities to claim the starting goalkeeper position at Liverpool from Alisson Becker, but Andoni Iraola has made his stance clear on the matter.

Football Insider reported that Mamardashvili hopes to get minutes in the Premier League in the coming months, after he delivered a good performance during Liverpool's victory over Tottenham in the League Cup. However, Liverpool have signed him with the hope that he will take over as goalkeeper in the future when the time comes for Alisson to leave.

However, the same source clarified that Iraola has decided to continue relying on Alisson and will not give Mamardashvili a chance to start in the league unless the Brazilian goalkeeper suffers an injury, confirming that Alisson remains the undisputed first choice.

Alisson has regained his form this season, making a fantastic save against Ivanilson in the 4th minute against AFC Bournemouth. Therefore, Giorgi Mamardashvili will currently settle for participating in cup matches, stepping in for Alisson in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League should he suffer an injury.

The situation may change next summer when Alisson's contract ends, as Giorgi Mamardashvili could become Liverpool's first-choice goalkeeper if the Brazilian departs. This comes despite the club recently signing Belgian Luka Proghmans, 18, for £30 million, who is spending the current season on loan at KRC Genk.
