Jürgen Klopp is set to make one of his first important decisions with the Germany national team, having chosen Marc-André ter Stegen to be the starting goalkeeper in his new project, according to Bild.

Klopp has personally contacted Ter Stegen to inform him that he is counting on him, but the decision has not yet been made official, with confirmation expected when the Germany squad is announced under the coach on Thursday.

Marc-André ter Stegen has been chosen following Manuel Neuer's retirement from international football after participating with Germany in the FIFA World Cup 2026, having returned to the national team despite his international retirement in 2024.

Oliver Baumann, Jonas Oerbig, and Alexander Nübel were in contention for the goalkeeper position, but "Bild" reported that Klopp has made Ter Stegen his first choice.

This comes at a time when Barcelona's goalkeeper on loan to Ajax is trying to regain his form, having lost his place in the Catalan team and spent the second half of last season on loan at Girona, where he only participated in two matches due to injury.

Marc-André ter Stegen has joined Ajax on loan until June 2027 to work again under Mitchell, who previously coached him at Girona, allowing the German goalkeeper to gain playing time and consistency to regain his form.

Marc-André ter Stegen has never been Germany's first-choice goalkeeper during Manuel Neuer's era, but the Bayern Munich goalkeeper's exit from the national team has opened the door for Klopp to select him to lead the goalkeeping.

The new phase is expected to take shape on Thursday with Klopp's first squad announcement ahead of the match against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on September 24 in Amsterdam.
