Borussia Dortmund secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Spanish side Villarreal in their Champions League opener, a match marked by dramatic events, including an injury to new Greek signing Konstantinos Karetsas.


Borussia Dortmund took the lead with an own goal from Renato Veiga in the 53rd minute, but Villarreal equalised through Santi Moretio in the 66th minute. Serhou Guirassy then restored the home side's advantage with a goal in the 80th minute, before the Guinean striker scored the third from the penalty spot in the 85th minute.


In stoppage time, specifically in the 93rd minute, Villarreal reduced the deficit to 3-2 with an own goal scored by Gnabry, igniting the match in its final moments, before Borussia Dortmund held on to their lead until the final whistle.


Borussia Dortmund suffered a blow as Konstantinos Karetsas, aged 18, had to leave the pitch after just 23 minutes. He stopped running and indicated that there was a problem before being carried off on a stretcher. Initial reports suggested that the player experienced circulatory issues, but his condition is stable and he has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
