Newcastle United has officially announced the signing of Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City on a long-term contract, making him the seventh signing for the first team during the current summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old player will don the number 6 shirt for Newcastle after progressing through Barcelona's La Masia academy. He previously had stints with Valencia, Porto, and Manchester City.

Nico Gonzalez has expressed his delight at joining Newcastle, stating: "I am very happy to be here at this wonderful club. I have heard so many positive things about the club and the city, and I am excited to live here and be part of this project."

He added: "I really love the black and white shirt, and I can't wait to start wearing it on the pitch with this club."

The Spanish player spoke about the atmosphere at St. James' Park, saying: "I have played at St. James' Park twice with Manchester City, and both matches were extremely tough. The atmosphere was amazing and the fans were incredibly passionate, and I can't wait to experience it as a player on our home ground."

Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle's head coach, praised the player's abilities, emphasizing that Gonzales possesses great quality and top-level experience, along with his capacity to carry the ball, push the team forward, and play under pressure.

Yasle added that the player possesses defensive discipline, the ability to read the game, and physical strength, which are factors that make him highly suitable for the nature of competition in the Premier League.

Ross Wilson, Newcastle's sporting director, stated that the club had been working for several weeks to finalize the deal, confirming that Gonzales was "the player we wanted" and that he was extremely excited to join Newcastle.

Gonzalez started his football journey with Montañeros in his hometown of La Coruna, before joining Barcelona's academy at the age of 11. He represented Barcelona B from the age of 17, and made his first-team debut in the opening round of the 2021/2022 La Liga season.

Gonzalez moved to Valencia on loan the following season, before permanently joining Portuguese side Porto in the summer of 2023. He then transferred to Manchester City, before now landing at Newcastle on a long-term contract.
