Al-Zawraa issues statement against refereeing team after draw with Karbala

Al-Zawraa's administrative body has issued an official statement this evening, expressing their "great astonishment" at the refereeing performance during the match against Karbala, which ended in a 1-1 draw in the 90th minute, as part of the second round of the Iraqi Premier League.

The statement came hours after a match that saw an early red card and a late own goal, reigniting the debate over the standard of local officiating at the start of the season.

The management of "Al-Nawras" began its statement by expressing its dissatisfaction with what happened at Al-Najaf Stadium.

"Al-Zawraa's board expresses strong surprise at the refereeing performance during the match against Karbala, and the incidents and decisions that directly and negatively affected the course and outcome of the match."

The management did not specify particular cases, but clearly referred to the sending off of defender Masis Artin in the 13th minute, a moment that turned the tide of the match and forced the team to play with ten men for 80 minutes.

Despite the sharp tone, Al-Zawraa's management emphasized their respect for the refereeing staff and the referees' committee in the Football Association, but they stressed the need for swift intervention.

The statement read:

"While we affirm our full respect for the refereeing crew and the responsible authorities, we demand a thorough review of the refereeing cases that occurred during the match, ensuring fairness and equal opportunities among all clubs."

One of the main points in Al-Zawraa's statement was the direct demand for a change in the management mechanism for major matches.

"The club management demands that the Football Association and the Referees Committee make use of Arab or foreign referees in upcoming matches to ensure the highest levels of neutrality and refereeing fairness, and to maintain the integrity of the competition."

This request is not the first of its kind in the Iraqi league, but it resurfaces strongly with every controversial refereeing decision, especially in matches that end with impactful decisions in the final minutes.

Al-Zawraa's management concluded their statement by affirming that their position does not stem from an emotional reaction after losing two points, but from a concern for the stability of the competition.

"The Al-Zawraa club management confirms that their objection stems from a commitment to the club's rights and the interests of the competition, and the necessity of providing a fair competitive environment that ensures all teams receive their full rights on the pitch, free from any influences that may affect match results."

Al-Zawraa earned a single point from the Karbala match despite leading with a goal from Michael Cabrera. They played with a man down since the 13th minute, before conceding a late own goal from Ali Adnan in stoppage time.

The result leaves the team with two points from two matches, exacerbating the tension within the Zawra house, which believes that the team deserves more than what it has achieved so far.
