Al-Riffa snatch a valuable draw against Al Zawraa in Gulf Club Champions League
In an exciting and fiercely contested match in the Gulf Club Champions League, Al-Riffa managed to snatch a valuable point from the home of Al Zawraa after a positive draw that asserted itself on the course of the match, allowing both teams to continue their fierce battle for qualification spots in their Gulf group.
The first half began with territorial control and a clear advantage for the home side Al Zawraa, who imposed their attacking rhythm and created real danger to the guests' goal through numerous chances and dangerous attempts that were not converted into goals.
In a surprising turn of events, just before the referee blew the whistle for half-time, specifically in the 46th minute, Al-Riffa were awarded a penalty. Rodrigo Yuri stepped up to take the kick, but it was missed, leaving the score at 0-0 as the referee signalled the end of the first half, much to the disappointment of the visitors and with a relative sense of relief for Al Zawraa.
With the start of the second half, Al Zawraa continued to apply pressure in search of a breakthrough goal, which they achieved in the 71st minute through star Mohammed Qassim, who scored the valuable opening goal for Al Zawraa, igniting the enthusiasm of the fans in the stands.
But the joy of Al Zawraa did not last long as Al-Riffa quickly returned to the match and responded strongly, exploiting some defensive gaps to score the equalizer through Mahdi Abduljabbar in the 73rd minute, bringing the match back to square one.
Both teams tried to snatch a winning goal in the remaining minutes and claim all the points, but complete caution and solid defensive lines prevented that until the referee blew the final whistle, announcing a points share between the two teams.
The disappointing draw for Al Zawraa's fans has seen the club's tally rise to 2 points, remaining in third place, while Al-Riffa has increased their points to 4, solidifying their position in second place, complicating the calculations of the group.
