Ahmed Hegazi, one of the best defenders in the history of Egyptian football, announced his retirement today. In a statement on his Facebook account, he said: "Today, Ahmed Hegazi, one of the best defenders in the history of Egyptian football, announced his retirement, after a great journey that deserves all praise and appreciation, whether with the Egyptian national team or with the clubs he played for in Egypt, Europe, or Saudi Arabia, led by Ismaily and Al Ahly."

He added: "He has always been an example of commitment, fighting spirit, and leadership both on and off the pitch... one of the names that has left a real mark in the history of Egypt."
