New Proposal for 2030 World Cup Qualifiers in Asia Sparks Controversy
Recent reports have circulated details of a proposed new system for the Asian qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup, pending an official announcement from the Asian Football Confederation regarding the qualification mechanism. The reports indicate that the system has not yet been officially approved, and what is being discussed remains within the realm of leaks and proposals.
According to reports, Asian teams will be divided into 8 groups, with six groups containing 6 teams each, while two groups will have 5 teams. All Asian teams will participate without preliminary rounds. The top team from each group will qualify directly for the World Cup, securing 8 direct qualification spots.
Details indicate that the top four second-place teams will compete in a playoff on neutral ground, following a semi-final and final format, with only the winner advancing to the global playoff. To ensure fairness among the groups, results of second-place teams against the sixth-placed teams will be disregarded when calculating the rankings of the best second-place teams.
The proposed system has sparked widespread controversy among fans, as critics believe it gives an unfair advantage to teams ranked in the top tier, making their path to direct qualification easier, while increasing the difficulty of competition for the remaining teams.
