Deauville Sports Festival Removes Gaza Image Amid Pressure
The management of the Deauville Sports Festival in France has removed a photo taken by Palestinian photographer Jihad Al-Sharafi in Gaza, which was part of the exhibition for the second edition of the festival running until September 6.
The image shows players from Gaza Sports Club and Al-Ahli during a football match held on a rehabilitated pitch, surrounded by destroyed buildings.
According to the local newspaper 'Le Pays Dog', a local official noticed the disappearance of the image on the evening of August 20, before it became clear that it had been replaced by a picture of cyclists.
Deauville Town Hall has confirmed that the image was replaced after receiving "requests" regarding it, without specifying the source. The decision was justified by stating: "We do not want to enter into controversy or disturb anyone."
A pro-Israel activist announced on Instagram that they changed their profile picture due to pressure, stating, "Never give up."
The removal of the image has drawn criticism, as it not only documents a football match but also reflects the Palestinians' commitment to life, sports, and hope despite the devastation surrounding them.
