The 2026 World Cup has not only been about competition on the pitch but has also seen a series of controversial issues that have dominated global headlines, leading many to believe that off-field debates rival the on-field excitement.

The most prominent issue was the treatment of the Iranian national team for political reasons, which was discussed extensively before and during the tournament.

One of the most controversial decisions was FIFA's suspension of the ban on U.S. striker Folarin Balogun after his red card, allowing him to participate in the match against Belgium. This decision faced widespread criticism due to reports of communication between U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, amid allegations of political interference in sporting decisions.

The tournament also witnessed a significant wave of refereeing controversies, particularly regarding the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, as several teams protested impactful decisions, notably in matches involving Argentina and Egypt, and England and Norway. Offside calls, penalty kicks, and red cards divided opinions among fans and experts, while FIFA defended the technology's operation despite increasing criticism.

Criticism extended to organizational aspects, with discussions surrounding water break intervals, plans for a halftime show during the final, soaring ticket prices, hot weather, and the expansion of the tournament to 48 teams, sparking a broad debate about the identity and future of the World Cup.

Additionally, the tournament faced other issues, including accusations of racism against Kylian Mbappé, and political and social discussions accompanying the hosting of the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, along with numerous organizational complaints from teams, making the 2026 edition one of the most controversial World Cups both on and off the field.
