De Jong Reveals Insights on Xavi's Appointment as Netherlands Coach

Nigel de Jong, the head coach of the Dutch Football Association, revealed the behind-the-scenes details of Xavi Hernandez's selection to lead the Netherlands national team, confirming that the Spanish coach was not the federation's first choice.

Frenkie de Jong revealed during Xavi's official presentation: "Pep Guardiola was our first choice to succeed Ronald Koeman, but he wanted a year off."

He added: "The second candidate was Arne Slot, but he preferred to continue working with the clubs."

He continued: "After that, we moved to the third option, the man sitting next to me, Xavi Hernandez."

The Dutch Football Association has announced the appointment of Xavi as the new head coach of the national team on a contract that runs until 2030, succeeding Ronald Koeman.

Despite being the third choice, Xavi confirmed that he does not feel uncomfortable about it, emphasizing his ambition to return the Dutch national team to its attacking style based on possession and initiative.
