Argentina has secured a spot in the 2026 World Cup semifinals following a 3-1 victory over Switzerland after extra time in the quarterfinal match held at Kansas City.
They will face England in the semifinals.
Argentina took the lead through Alexis Mac Allister in the 10th minute, converting a corner taken by Messi with a header into the net.
Switzerland equalized in the 68th minute with a goal from Dan Ndoye, who received a pass from Rodriguez before firing a low shot from inside the box into the net.
In the 70th minute, Paredes received a yellow card for a foul on a Swiss player, but the referee reviewed the play with VAR, revealing that Swiss player Breel Embolo had simulated the foul, leading to a second yellow card and a red card for him.
After the regular time ended in a 1-1 draw, Argentina managed to score a second goal through Julian Alvarez in the 112th minute with a stunning shot from outside the box that the goalkeeper failed to save.
In the 120th minute, Lautaro Martinez added a third goal after a counterattack initiated by Almada inside the box; the goalkeeper deflected the shot, but Martinez followed up to score, sealing the victory for La Albiceleste.
