CAF Celebrates Morocco's Historic Achievement
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has praised the new achievement of the Moroccan national team, which reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Canada 3-0, affirming that the "Atlas Lions" continue to establish themselves as one of the continent's top teams on the global stage.
CAF's official website noted that Morocco has become the first African team to reach the quarter-finals in two consecutive World Cup editions, continuing the historic journey that began at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, when they became the first African and Arab team to reach the semi-finals.
The report highlighted that the Moroccan team faced a tough test in the first half against Canada, which applied offensive pressure and created several chances, but goalkeeper Yassine Bounou's brilliance kept the net intact, before the "Atlas Lions" took full control of the match in the second half.
CAF spotlighted the impressive performance of Azzedine Ounahi, who opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a powerful shot, before adding a second goal in the 82nd minute following a quick counter-attack, while Sofiane Rahimi capped off Morocco's three-goal tally in stoppage time.
The report confirmed that Ounahi's brace was historic, as he became the first African player to score two goals in a knockout match at the World Cup since Senegal's Henri Camara in 2002, and Morocco continued its positive results in matches where Ounahi finds the net.
CAF concluded its report by stating that the Moroccan team now carries the hopes of African football in the 2026 World Cup, having once again demonstrated its strong character and ability to handle the pressures of knockout stages, awaiting a clash with the winner of the France vs. Paraguay match in the quarter-finals, in search of another historic achievement.
