England Takes Precautions Ahead of Mexico Clash
The England national team has implemented a series of precautionary measures ahead of their upcoming Round of 16 match against Mexico in the 2026 World Cup, fearing a repeat of the situation faced by Ecuador, who officially complained to FIFA after their players were continuously disturbed outside their hotel on the eve of their match against the hosts.
According to Sami Maqbel from BBC, the English Football Association will keep the team's hotel location as secret as possible to avoid crowd gatherings, amid concerns about the site being leaked on social media. The coaching staff has also devised plans to ensure player comfort, including the use of earplugs, sleep masks, and some natural sleep aids in case of any attempts to disturb the delegation.
The challenges are not limited to the atmosphere outside the hotel, as England will play at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, which is located at an altitude of approximately 2,240 meters above sea level, potentially affecting players' fitness and oxygen levels. Coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that this altitude gives the Mexican team a clear advantage, especially with the difficulty of acclimatizing for his players in the short time available before the match.
These preparations come amid heightened tensions ahead of the anticipated clash, following the Ecuadorian Football Federation's official complaint to FIFA, accusing Mexican fans of blowing horns, setting off fireworks, and making loud chants outside the team's hotel throughout the night, an act deemed contrary to the principles of fair play.
