Sebastián Becacisse Steps Down as Ecuador National Team Coach
Argentinian coach Sebastián Becacisse has officially announced his departure from the Ecuador national team following their exit in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, losing 2-0 to Mexico, thus ending his tenure with "La Tri."
In a press conference after the match, Becacisse confirmed that his departure coincided with the end of his contract following Ecuador's participation in the tournament, expressing his disappointment at not achieving the goal he set for the team, which was to record Ecuador's best performance in World Cup history.
The Argentinian coach stated he leaves his position with "great gratitude and a clear conscience," praising the players for their efforts throughout his tenure, and noted that he wished to continue due to the special bond he had with the group, but the end of the tournament also marked the end of his mission with the national team.
The Ecuadorian Football Federation closes the chapter on Becacisse after a period that saw him successfully lead the team to the World Cup finals, before their journey ended in the Round of 32, while the federation begins the search for a new coach to lead the team in the upcoming phase.
