FIFA Paves the Way for Russia's Return to Tournaments
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) confirmed Russia's return to participate in one of its competitions for the first time in over four years, after extending an invitation to Russia's under-15 team to participate in the new edition of the World Cup for this age group. This step is considered the beginning of reintegrating Russian football into international competitions.
Russia, which hosted the 2018 World Cup, was suspended from all official FIFA and UEFA competitions in 2022 following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. This led to the exclusion of its national teams and clubs from continental and international tournaments, limiting them to playing friendly and local matches.
This step indicates a partial easing of the sports sanctions imposed on Russia, as the return is currently limited to one age category without involving the national teams or major clubs, with the anticipated participation considered a preliminary test for a broader return in the future.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously expressed his support for the idea of gradually reintegrating Russian youth teams, considering that youth categories could serve as a suitable gateway for Russia's full return to international football.
