Ochoa Most Likely to Guard Mexico's Goal Against Czech Republic

Monday 22-06-2026
Reports coming from the Mexico national team camp indicate that veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is the leading candidate to start against the Czech Republic on Thursday, in the final group stage match of the 2026 World Cup.

This comes after the Mexican national team secured qualification to the round of 32 and topped Group A following their victory over South Korea, which might prompt coach Javier Aguirre to make some changes and give opportunities to players who have not participated much in the tournament so far.

Ochoa had started the tournament as a backup goalkeeper behind Raúl Rangel, as the coaching staff preferred to rely on the latter in the first two matches against South Africa and South Korea.

If he participates against the Czech Republic, Ochoa will add a new chapter to his exceptional career with "El Tri," having already become the first player in history to be included in the squads for six different World Cup editions.

As of now, there has been no official announcement from the Mexican Federation or coach Aguirre regarding the starting lineup, but media indications strongly suggest that Ochoa will get his first opportunity in the 2026 World Cup during the match against the Czech Republic.
