After 16 Years of Waiting.. Mokwena Brings South Africa Back to the Scoresheet in the World Cup

Thursday 18-06-2026
The South African national team star, Teboho Mokoena, succeeded in ending a long 16-year drought by scoring the equalizing goal for the "Bafana Bafana" team against the Czech Republic in the 2026 World Cup with a decisive penalty kick.

Mokoena's goal is South Africa's first in the World Cup finals since striker Katlego Mphela scored against France during the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa, in a match that ended with the hosts winning 2-1.

The South African national team returned to the World Cup this year after being absent since the 2010 edition.

In doing so, Mokwena succeeded in writing his name into the history books, granting his country's fans a moment they had awaited for more than a decade and a half.
