Castrop: The German-Korean Writing a New Chapter with the Taeguk Warriors

Jens Castrop began his World Cup journey from the bench for South Korea against the Czech Republic, but just being on the "Taegeuk Warriors" roster tells a unique story of a player raised between two different cultures.

Castrop was born in Germany to a German father and a South Korean mother, and he currently plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Despite growing up in Germany, the player stated in an interview with the FIFA website that he had always been aware since childhood that he was different from his peers, saying: "Growing up, I always knew that I wasn't just an ordinary German like the others in my class. I always knew that I was at least half Korean. I always knew that I was Korean."

Castrop represented Germany's youth teams but ultimately decided to play for South Korea. He participated in friendly matches with the team before the World Cup, fulfilling his dream of representing his mother's country on the international stage.

Castrop will become the second player of mixed heritage to represent South Korea in the World Cup, following Jang Dae-il, who participated in the 1998 World Cup. Jang was born to a British father and a South Korean mother, making the Borussia Mönchengladbach player part of a new chapter in the history of Korean football.
