River Plate officially announced the signing of veteran Argentine defender Nicolás Otamendi on a free transfer after he left Benfica this summer.
The contract signing ceremony took place yesterday, Friday, May 29, in the presence of the club president Stefano Di Carlo, at the headquarters of the sports institution.
Under the agreement, Otamendi will join River Plate starting from July 1, 2026, with a contract extending until December 31, 2027, marking a new phase in his professional career within Argentine football.
The signing of Otamendi represents a significant addition to River Plate's defense, given the extensive experience the player possesses both domestically and internationally, following a distinguished career in European football and with the Argentine national team.
Otamendi said: "I have always been a River fan. My whole family is passionate about it. I would like to be able to play there. People have treated me wonderfully, and even on the street to this day, they ask me to go to River."
