The Premier League Moves to Reject Expanding VAR Powers Next Season

Monday 11-05-2026
Premier League clubs are leaning towards rejecting the granting of additional powers to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology starting from next season, despite the new amendments approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

The modifications allow the technology to intervene in the calculation of corner kicks and second yellow cards, and they are set to be implemented in the next World Cup at the request of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

According to The Guardian, the English referees' committee "PGMO" recommended not expanding the use of technology within the Premier League due to concerns about increasing match durations and added pressure on referees. The committee also believes that increased video interventions could negatively impact the viewing experience and the competition's broadcasting partners.

On the other hand, FIFA supports the implementation of the new amendments, as the chairman of the referees committee, Pierluigi Collina, and the president of the international federation, Gianni Infantino, believe that incorrect decisions in corner kicks or dismissals can be decisive in World Cup matches, especially in knockout stages. Additionally, the inclusion of hydration breaks in the World Cup makes the issue of increased time less bothersome compared to the English Premier League.

The controversy escalated after the recent match between West Ham United and Arsenal, when a late goal by Callum Wilson was disallowed following a video assistant referee review, in a moment that could impact the title race and relegation battle. Referees' chief Howard Webb is expected to explain the decision's details during an analytical program this week, while West Ham intends to file an official complaint despite knowing the decision will not be changed.
