Scheduling Controversy in Italian League: Rome Derby Threatened to be Played at Noon Due to Organizational Crisis
Wednesday 06-05-2026
The Italian league is experiencing scheduling chaos before the penultimate round, as the Rome derby between Roma and Lazio faces a strong possibility of being held at 12:30 PM, due to the inability to find a suitable time that balances security and television broadcast requirements. This crisis arises from the overlap of the round with major events in the capital, Rome.

The main issue is the scheduling of the match to coincide with the final of the Rome International Tennis Championship, set for the same day at 17:00. This means tens of thousands will converge on an area very close to the Stadio Olimpico, raising significant security concerns for the police and local authorities. Having two events of this magnitude in the same area within close hours has made the situation more complicated than usual.

According to reports, security authorities refuse to hold the derby in the evening due to the historical sensitivity of the match and the potential for tension or clashes. However, scheduling it in the afternoon is also not preferred, leaving almost no viable options. This situation may compel the Italian League Association to schedule several crucial matches at the same time, including those competing for spots in the UEFA Champions League.

On the other hand, the president of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi, criticized the poor coordination among the organizing bodies, emphasizing that the date of the tennis final has been known for years and should have been considered when preparing the league schedule. As discussions continue, the final decision remains in the hands of the league association and security authorities in the coming days.
