Mokyo Considers Representing Congo Instead of Belgium
The player Jorcy Mukieu is considering changing his international representation from the Belgian national team to the Congolese national team, despite his previous participation with the Belgian senior team.
The Ajax Amsterdam player confirmed that he has not yet made a decision, indicating that he will not make any final decision before the end of the current season.
Mokio, 18 years old, played his first international minutes with the Belgian national team against Ukraine on March 20, 2025, in the UEFA Nations League, a match that ended with Belgium losing 3-1. Due to his official participation with the Belgian team, FIFA regulations prevent him from playing for Congo before 2028 if he decides to change his sporting nationality, which means he cannot participate with Congo in the upcoming World Cup.
The Belgian Football Association is aware of the player's hesitation and intends to hold additional sessions with him in the coming weeks to try to convince him to continue with Belgium.
The reports also indicated that the Belgian federation will not offer any financial incentives to the player, in reference to what sometimes happens with some African teams. This issue arises following the decision of another talent, Ryan Bonida, to represent Morocco instead of Belgium.
Mokio is regarded as one of the most promising rising talents in European football, having been signed by Ajax from the Gent Academy and continuing his impressive development. This season, the player has participated in 23 matches in the Dutch league and is preparing to sign a new contract with Ajax that will extend until the summer of 2031.
