Arbeloa: Our Goal is to Win Regardless of Barcelona's Results, and What Mbappé Did Doesn't Bother Me
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa appeared at a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Real Betis, in the 32nd round of the Spanish League, at the La Cartuja Stadium.
The coach said in his speech: "Betis is a team that achieved a very important victory last Tuesday and is regaining players of great significance. There is no need to explain the value of a competitor like Betis, whether in terms of the players or the coach, whom I have the utmost respect and appreciation for. It will be an extremely difficult match for us."
He added: "Our goal should be to win the remaining six matches, regardless of what Barcelona does. We need to deliver a strong performance, continue to develop, and improve many aspects in the league. Our focus now is solely on winning tomorrow, and then we will think about the rest of the matches."
He continued: "My primary goal should not be to motivate Real Madrid players; rather, they should have their own strong self-motivation. My role is to prepare them for what they will face on the field and to ensure we have a clear playing strategy, which is what I dedicate most of my time to."
Regarding Carvajal's situation: "My response the other day was sharp and serious to a question I found inappropriate, and it wasn't directed against Carvajal. You can ask all my players about how I speak about him in front of the group. It's clear to me that there's an attempt to put him in a completely unfair position, and this is unjustified. He is more than ready to participate in the World Cup and is performing exceptionally well. I couldn't be happier with his level. He is a key player for us both on and off the field, and he should be the same with the national team, especially in a tournament like the World Cup. He is not only a legend at Real Madrid but also the most important player to have graduated from the club's academy in its history. My relationship with him has always been great since his arrival, as we shared the locker room, and I have always treated him with respect, appreciation, and admiration."
He continued: "Anyone who thinks that I set the lineup for reasons other than purely football-related, or that I might do so for personal reasons, should themselves be capable of doing something like that. It's very hard for me to imagine any coach in the world of football not setting their lineup based on sporting reasons."
He followed up: "It's very simple, the problem is that I can only play with 11 players. Choosing a particular player does not mean that I am dissatisfied with those who do not participate. As I always say, I feel unfair to many players. My goal is to feel this shortcoming towards them because they train hard, and every time they participate, they prove their ability to help. There are many players who deserve more minutes than they get, but in the end, the rules allow for 11 players in the starting lineup and only 5 substitutions. In the last match too, I wished to give more players the opportunity in the second half because I see them training, which no one else sees. In short, the lack of participation for some does not mean dissatisfaction with them, but it is the reality of football, and it is entirely clear to me."
Regarding the reason for relying on Arnold instead of Carvajal: "Alexander Arnold is showing a very impressive level, and I believe his performance is impeccable. At the moment, he deserves to play. When he didn't participate and Carvajal took on the task, he performed very well. Often, we forget that Real Madrid risks everything in every match, and so do I. Therefore, every time I put a player on the field, I must trust him a lot, because every match for me is a matter of life or death. So, I think that often goes unappreciated; when a coach puts a player on the field, it's because he truly believes he deserves it, and above all, because he will help win the match. As I always tell the players, I am not a coach who gives free minutes to anyone. As I told you, there are players I wish could participate more than they do now."
He clarified whether he was bothered by Kylian Mbappé liking a post calling for the signing of José Mourinho: "No, not at all. These are matters I don't even evaluate, and they neither bother nor concern me; whether he liked Mourinho or Julia Roberts, it's no problem. These matters hold no significance whatsoever."
Regarding his future and the league battle: "Well, what I've always told you is that my goal is for Real Madrid to win every match they play, and my future doesn't matter. I believe I carry a great responsibility, and Real Madrid's responsibility is to go out and win every match for us. As I always repeat, the remaining six matches are essential and vital regardless of what happens in the league. That's how I approach it, and that's what I ask of the players. I think we need to make a very great effort; we know the future that awaits the players in the coming months, but I asked them to think only about Real Madrid. I believe we must not only be professional and highly respectful of the badge but also with ourselves and what we must impose on ourselves, and that should be giving 100% of our effort until the last day."
Regarding the reason for Vinicius apologizing to the fans during his goal against Alaves: "I don't know the reason... The truth is that you should ask him if you get the chance. He is ready to play tomorrow and will be in the starting lineup. As I have said many times, I am proud to have him on the team, and I am sure he will deliver a great match tomorrow, with an amazing performance and great effort as he always does."
"In current football, everything is important: the moral, mental, emotional, tactical, and physical aspects. I believe that to win today, you must be at a very high level in all the aspects we mentioned. It's important, after this last week, to be able to focus on everything we need to improve and go out to give 100% of our effort. This is the only thing I ask of them; that when the match ends, we look back on the field and feel that we left everything we had inside, that we thought about the team and gave our best for a specific idea and for the group. And of course, this should be the goal tomorrow as well. To win a match, you need to have many things very clear and do many things well. In addition to having high self-discipline, you must be well-prepared tactically, technically, and on all levels. There are many things we need to correct and improve to be able to reach the required level."
Regarding Éder Militão's condition: "Well, we will conduct an MRI for him now. What we saw yesterday is that the injury doesn't seem serious, and it appears to be just a bruise. However, we will wait for the results of the tests he will undergo, and shortly we will know the exact extent of the injury. Nevertheless, I assure you that you can be at ease, as it doesn't seem serious at all."
Regarding the academy players: "I believe the academy players have helped us a lot in situations where we needed them, and I think they are fulfilling their essential role in 'La Cantera' very well. They are doing a great job as we saw the other day with La Jolla. The performance of all the academy teams, and Castilla in the position it currently holds... the players have proven they can support the first team. For me, this is one of the most positive aspects this year; the performance of these players. My trust in them will always remain."
He concluded: "Will I understand if players who have a guaranteed spot with their national teams become more cautious for fear of injuries before the World Cup? No, I will not understand that. I don't do that, and when I don't do something, I want to set an example, and that's what I ask of my players. We have to give our all because we represent Real Madrid, and this won't prevent any of them from fighting in the World Cup later. Our duty is to win these remaining six matches, and I will be very happy to see this commitment from all of them, and I am sure we will see it."
