Wednesday 22-04-2026
In a comprehensive interview, legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon spoke about his career on and off the field, recalling his key moments with Juventus and the Italian national team, particularly his retirement, the 2006 World Cup, and the Calciopoli scandal. He also pointed out the challenges currently facing Italian football, in addition to his recent experience with the national team after ending his career as a player.

Regarding the decision to retire, Buffon explained that he experienced mixed emotions. He felt that he had made the right decision after a career spanning nearly 30 years, but at the same time, he was anxious about the significant change in his life.

He added that he does not miss playing currently, affirming that he has adapted to his new, calmer lifestyle, and has learned to accept the new phase and move forward.

When discussing his best periods, Buffon considered the 2002-2003 season as the highlight of his career, alongside his brilliance in the 2006 World Cup, where he felt an exceptional state of focus and confidence, describing that feeling as akin to being "invincible," with a great mental clarity that is difficult to explain.

As for the Calciopoli scandal and Juventus's relegation to the second division, Buffon confirmed that they paid an "inexplicable price," despite being certain they had committed no wrongdoing. He emphasized that the crisis strengthened their mental resilience, especially before the World Cup, explaining that looking in the mirror and feeling a clear conscience was the most important factor that gave them the strength to overcome that difficult phase.
