Referees Committee Confirms Correctness of Decision Not to Award Penalty for Al-Ahly Against Ceramica
Wednesday 08-04-2026
The main referees' committee resolved the controversy that arose following the match between Al Ahly and Ceramica Cleopatra regarding the red team's demand for a penalty kick in the final minutes, after a thorough review of the contentious situation.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after referee Mahmoud Wafa decided to continue play without awarding a penalty, a decision that sparked widespread objections from Al Ahly's players and coaching staff.

According to what was circulated from within the committee chaired by Oscar Ruiz, the members unanimously agreed on the correctness of the on-field referee's decision in full, emphasizing that the issue stems from the way the footage was presented by the video assistant referee, Mahmoud Ashour.

The committee clarified that the video assistant referee showed the incident only from the rear camera angle, which might suggest a handball warranting a penalty. However, the field referee requested a review from a clearer angle, which showed that the defender's hand position was natural and did not warrant a foul.

The committee based its decision on similar arbitration cases at the international level, including a similar incident in the women's football competitions at the Paris Olympics, where the same decision to continue play was made. The committee closed the case by affirming the referee's decision, noting that the intervention of the video assistant referee was not appropriate in this instance.
