Court Issues Final Verdict in Sala Case
Tuesday 31-03-2026
The court issued its final verdict in the transfer case of Argentine player Emiliano Sala between Cardiff City and Nantes, rejecting the large claim made by Cardiff for £122 million, and ordered the club to pay only £400,000 as moral compensation to Nantes.

Cardiff had based its claim on expert estimates showing the potential financial losses for the team, including expected goals and potential points, with a calculated probability of 54.2% for the team to remain in the Premier League if Sala had continued with them.

This verdict comes 7 years after Sala's death in January 2019, following the crash of the plane that was carrying him as he was heading to complete his transfer to Cardiff for €17 million, an incident that shook the football world and sparked widespread debate over club responsibilities and legal procedures related to transfers.

The final verdict confirmed the rejection of the massive financial claims, emphasizing the symbolic compensation to Nantes, thus ending one of the longest legal cases related to sports transfers in Europe.
