Iraqi Player Reveals Plan to Qualify for the World Cup
Monday 30-03-2026
Former Iraqi national team player Riyad Mazhar confirmed that controlling the midfield represents the ideal path to surpass Bolivia in the World Cup 2026 intercontinental playoff final in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Iraq aspires to make its second World Cup appearance after its first participation in Mexico in 1986, and the players are looking forward to competing with the strongest teams between June 11 and July 19.

Mazhar said in statements to winwin: 'Facing Bolivia seems more suitable for us compared to Suriname, due to the difference in style. Suriname plays fast attacking football with high physical strength, making it more physically challenging, while Bolivia's defense suffers from some slowness.'

He added: 'Choosing the right lineup is a decisive factor in tipping the balance. Graham Arnold is required to select elements capable of neutralizing the opponent's threat and dealing with their key plays correctly to ensure a positive result in the final scheduled for six o'clock next Wednesday morning Mecca and Doha time.'

He explained: 'The Iraqi team has the full ability to achieve victory. The physical readiness of the players is better compared to the opponent, especially with the continuation of the Iraqi Stars League competitions in the past period.'

He stated: 'The match is a historic opportunity to secure the qualification ticket and put an end to previous disappointments, granting the fans a long-awaited joy. The players are aware of the responsibility and are keen to accomplish the task.'

Mazhar spoke about the role of the midfield, saying: 'The midfield players in the team are capable of imposing the rhythm against Bolivia. We hope the coach will field the most prepared element and include those with technical abilities that help establish control from the beginning until the final whistle.'

He concluded by saying: 'Whoever controls the pace of play will have the advantage in deciding the result. I see that the team is ready for this challenge, and facing Bolivia will not be technically complicated if handled correctly psychologically, with high focus on the field to prevent the opponent from playing comfortably.'
