Kompany: This is my opinion on facing Real Madrid, and we have this confidence
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany spoke in a press statement after the 4-1 victory over Atalanta in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16, allowing the Bavarians to advance to the quarter-finals, noting that the first leg ended 6-1 in favor of the German club.
The coach commented on facing Real Madrid in the quarter-finals: 'The aura surrounding both clubs is immense, and who is the better team right now is not important. The history of both clubs is very great, and the talent on the field makes the match special.'
He added: 'With Real Madrid, the higher the level, the higher their level as well, so I expect a great match, and I hope everyone enjoys it. For us, we want to win and qualify.'
He continued: 'Will you play with the same style against Real Madrid? The high pressure, whether against Real Madrid or any other team, must be applied by everyone, there is no other choice. But if you look at our defensive style, when we are cohesive and organized, we are calm as well, regardless of what the match brings. When you play against such an opponent, you of course need players who have confidence in their ability to execute that. And we have this confidence.'
Regarding involving young players: 'At Bayern, it is difficult to get minutes, and I hope they enjoy these moments. Some of these players have been training with us for 3 or 4 or even 5 months, and Pavic has been training with us for about a year despite his young age, and when the opportunity comes, it is great for them. But they still have a long way to go. I think Lenart Karl is more advanced than the rest of the academy players and has proven himself within the team. As for the others, they have to learn from the training and from these moments so they can later help the team.'
He concluded: 'Do you feel disappointed not facing Manchester City and Guardiola: I try to separate things. I always wish the best for Manchester City, and this is natural. So when it doesn't concern me, I wish them to win, but in this case, the most important thing for us was that I didn't think much about who we would face in the next round, but I was thinking about Atalanta and ensuring qualification, and now we know we will face Real Madrid. It's a great encounter, and it's important for the club, for the players, and I also think for the neutral fans.'
