Arbeloa: This is my opinion on Güler's goal, and facing City will be tough and complex
Sunday 15-03-2026
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa appeared at a press conference following the 4-1 victory over Elche in the 28th round of the Spanish League, in the match held at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

The coach said: "Academy players? Being a club's own product is indescribable, just like Fran, Thiago, Cesar, and Gon... It's a wonderful feeling. I am very happy and extremely proud. It's not just about giving them the opportunity to play, but the way they presented themselves on the field. They have proven to have great talent, high quality, and strong character. It's great news, and they are all role models to follow."

He added about Guler's goal: "That goal deserves to be framed on the wall. It's extraordinary and amazing. I saw everyone putting their hands on their heads in sheer astonishment, and I did too. Honestly, it's worth a fan paying the price of a ticket, maybe even two or three, just to see what he did."

Regarding Federico Valverde: "Yes, he could become the Juanito of the 21st century... and perhaps even Hugo Sanchez at this rate. What he offers is insane. He plays with great freedom, and it's wonderful to experience daily life with a player like him. He leads the team by example on the field, and I congratulate him on what he delivers and hope he continues on this path."

Regarding facing Man City: "It will be a very complex match, as they will put us under great pressure and we will have to endure. We have a good advantage, but we should not think about that. We have experience from past years and we know that when they impose their style, they can outperform any team. We must give our all, stay highly focused, and play to win, otherwise, we will suffer a lot."

Regarding the participation of a large number of academy players: "For someone who was an academy player and reached the first team, this is a day of great pride and happiness. It reminded me of Real Madrid in the era of 'La Quinta.' Emilio Butragueño would certainly be proud. I am happy to see these players and their display of talent to everyone. It is a day that every Real Madrid fan will remember."

He continued about the team's performance this season: "We went through very good moments, but sometimes we lacked consistency. We felt we were making progress, then a sudden setback would occur. We still have room for improvement, but the players' commitment is exceptional. If everyone doesn't work together, it will be difficult to win, whether in the league or the Champions League."

Regarding scoring from players who are not forwards: "We need that. Even when Kylian Mbappe returns, we will still need goals from other players. It's clear that Mbappe is a decisive player, but the rest of the team must also contribute to scoring."

Regarding Fran Garcia: "I thank him a lot. Playing well is natural when you participate regularly, but the hard part is staying professional even when you don't play much. Fran trains hard and always helps his teammates without any complaints. I wish I had 25 players like him on the team."

He added: "Will Asensio be present against Manchester City? I don't know."

Regarding the future of academy players: "Each case is different. Some leave to gain experience and then return, as happened with Dani Carvajal, and some stay, like Nacho Fernandez. The important thing is to have academy players in the team because they convey the club's spirit to the newcomers."

He emphasized, "I haven't felt any negative atmosphere since I took on this position. The victory over Celta Vigo was a good start before facing Manchester City, which is why I placed great importance on today's match. What lies ahead is challenging, but this win gives us a significant morale boost."

He added regarding Mbappe's readiness: "We will have training tomorrow and we will test Mbappe, and I will talk to him to know how he feels. I hope he is ready, as his return would be great news."

He noted: "Brahim Diaz? Any player is happy when they play and perform well. When I arrived, he was out of the team due to his participation in the Africa Cup, but he was patient and worked hard. Opportunities always come to those who work. He delivered a great match against Manchester City, and we need his quality."

He concluded regarding Vinicius' substitution: "I thanked him for the great effort he put in over the past two months. Playing at this rate requires immense effort. I want players who continue to fight when things get tough. Now it's time to rest because we will need to run a lot again on Tuesday."
