Arbeloa: This is Mbappe's Situation, and a Trophyless Season Doesn't Worry Me
Thursday 05-03-2026
Real Madrid coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, spoke to the media in the city of Real Madrid ahead of the match against Celta Vigo in the 27th round of La Liga, scheduled for Friday evening.

The coach said: "We are approaching an away match that will not be easy at all against a great team with a coach who is doing an excellent job. They are a well-organized team playing with great confidence. They have won four consecutive matches and are playing very good football. Also, the Balaídos Stadium always has a great atmosphere when Real Madrid visits, so it will be a tough and challenging encounter."

He added: "We have suffered two consecutive defeats in the league, not counting the Champions League match. Of course, in a club like Real Madrid, defeat is always difficult due to the expectations and pressures, but all we are thinking about now is tomorrow's match, that is the only thing occupying us."

He emphasized: "We know well what we will face, and we were aware of it in the two matches we did not succeed in winning. We know the level we must deliver if we want to win against a strong opponent, and we realize that it largely depends on us and the performance we will deliver. For us, the past does not exist, and all our focus is on the Balaídos Stadium."

He elaborated on Mbappe's condition: "I talk to him daily. Of course, we are closely monitoring his condition and know what he is suffering from and how he feels. His condition is improving day by day. We are taking it step by step and monitoring his progress, but the news so far is all positive. He is continuously improving."

He continued: "What if the team cannot compete for the league and the Champions League? We have a match tomorrow, let's first go to play this difficult match, and we believe in the possibility of achieving three points. We still have 36 points ahead, and we are only 4 points behind, not 18. This is the only thing we should think about; we do not want to put ourselves in scenarios that have not yet happened, and regardless of what will happen, this is Real Madrid. As long as we have a mathematical chance to compete, we will fight. And if a day comes when there is no mathematical chance, we will continue to fight as well. This is this club, and I only understand Real Madrid in this way: always fighting."

Regarding the team's atmosphere: "I understand that after two losses like the ones we suffered, the atmosphere may not be very positive, but inside the dressing room, we are well aware that the league is still long, and we will fight in every match to collect the three points and try to win the championship."

Regarding the possibility of ending the season without titles: "I am only thinking about the Celta Vigo match, that is the only thing occupying my mind now, and it is what I am focusing on and will work on with my players. I am not thinking about anything else."

On the reason for the recent defeats: "It's not that I don't like explaining losses, but I see that the most important thing is not to explain failure but to win. There's no benefit in explaining the reasons for the loss. In Real Madrid, the only important thing is to win the next match. Of course, I can talk about learning processes and development, but that won't help much. I am aware that the team is capable of playing better, as we have a great squad. We will have a tough match tomorrow and many absences, but I am confident that we have enough players to win, deliver a better performance, and show a more ambitious mentality that matches this emblem. And until my last day here, I will fight to achieve that."

On team absences: "I would say it makes things easier for me because I will think less. We trust ourselves, and this is what I convey to the players. This is Real Madrid, we don't look for excuses. We must grow in the face of difficulties. Professionals must show up when things get tough. When the team wins and everyone performs well, wearing this shirt is easy, but now is the time we must show our value. In such moments, it becomes clear who deserves to wear this shirt and this emblem."

He noted: "Everything related to Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe's injuries is fully organized by Real Madrid's medical staff and the physical preparation department. They have been in London and Paris with club specialists, and everything is under full supervision from Real Madrid."

On the lack of continuity in performance: "The main problem is that it's not easy. We haven't had enough time to work on everything we want. In fifty days, we've played more matches than we've trained. The process of players adapting to what we ask of them is ongoing as it is now, but we must be more consistent in performance, not just in results, as the ideas we want to implement on the field are also important."

He continued: "I am very clear on the topic of Dean Howsen and Franco Mastantono. For Mastantono, the Real Madrid youth team is full of players his age. As for Howsen, he is an international player and can play with Castilla. I remember when Vinicius Junior arrived, what was said about him, and look where he is now: he has won the Champions League twice and become one of the best players in the world. We must be patient with players of this level of talent in their first season with Real Madrid. Playing here is not like playing for any team, but in the most demanding club. They are doing a great job and have my full confidence, and they will be important not only in the future but also in the present. I hope the fans understand the nature of each player and support them and demand work and effort. Football is a game of mistakes, and these experiences will make them grow. Great nights await us with them."

On the lack of participation of Brahim Diaz: "Nothing happened. Maybe he plays less than he deserves, and the person responsible for that is me. He trains excellently, and there's no need to talk about his capabilities or what he has offered with his national team or during his years with Real Madrid. I am convinced I can benefit from him more than I do now. This is something that falls under my responsibilities, and I will make more effort so he can give us more because he has the capabilities to do so."

He concluded regarding the readiness of Alaba and Asensio: "David Alaba will not be ready, while we believe Raul Asensio will be available. And if Alaba or Asensio are not present, one of the academy players like Diego Aguado or Lamine Fati will play, but I believe Asensio will be available for tomorrow's match."
