Blatter Criticizes 2026 World Cup and Describes Its Distribution as 'Unfair'
Sunday 22-02-2026
The Swiss Sepp Blatter, former president of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), expressed strong reservations about the organization of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He considered that the current format of the tournament does not reflect the principle of fairness among the host countries and favors one party more than the others.

Blatter explained that the United States will receive the largest share of matches and economic returns, while Canada's and Mexico's roles will be limited to hosting a small number of games, making their contribution to the organization secondary compared to the American role.

Blatter also criticized the interference of politics in football, pointing out that the relationship between US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino played a role in the course of organizing the tournament, considering that football has turned into a commercial and political project instead of being a global sports and cultural event.

The former FIFA president concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the current focus on financial returns has come at the expense of the spirit of the game and its fans, warning that continued political interference in major tournaments could harm the global image of football.
