Arbeloa Talks About Osasuna, Racism, and Real Madrid's Preparations
Friday 20-02-2026
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa appeared in a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Osasuna in the 25th round of the Spanish league, at the El Sadar Stadium.

The coach said: "Osasuna haven't lost at home for two months. They are a team going through a very great period. We all know how difficult the El Sadar Stadium is for Real Madrid. Personally, I have only won there once among the times I've played at that stadium. We are fully aware of the difficulty of the battle, the strength of the opponent, and the great work their coach is doing. We will prepare for the match in the best possible way, and we know that tomorrow's three points are extremely important."

He added regarding the racist abuses against Vinicius: "Vini Jr. was sad, as we all were. More importantly, he was extremely angry about what happened. It is a racist act that has no place in sports or in our society. We have a great opportunity not to let this pass unnoticed and to continue fighting against this scourge, which is racism. The most important thing is to combat actions like those we experienced a few days ago. It is an unacceptable situation, and we do not want it to be repeated. They will find us confronting them, especially when it involves a colleague in the profession. It is a behavior we do not want to happen and should not happen. Nothing, absolutely nothing, justifies a racist act."

Regarding the team's condition: "Mbappe's knee is much better. The issue hasn't completely disappeared, but he feels better every day. As for the team, it has seen significant growth in recent weeks. I am as calm now as I was when there were criticisms; we understand the demands of this club and want to continue working. The league is very long, and for me, it almost hasn't started yet. We have a very complicated visit ahead, like all matches, and our goal is not to slack off. To win all matches, we must be at our best possible level."

He continued: "When the coach arrives, he needs to get to know the players, work with them, and see what is best. The players' performance is what puts them on the field. We are responding well, and the players are also delivering a very good level. Every day we want to show both collective and individual development. We will work until this performance reaches all the players. It's not about eleven players, but about the 25 players we have with us. Everything we are experiencing now is thanks to the work of all the players."

Regarding the possibility of withdrawing from the Benfica match after the racism incident: "It was Vinny's decision to return to the field and continue playing. If he had decided not to continue, we would have all gone to the locker rooms one after the other. I told the players that there is no title or victory that makes me as proud as last Tuesday's win, as well as the statements that followed the match. Nothing makes me prouder than seeing a united team protecting a teammate and fighting together in this way."

Regarding Mourinho's statements: "I think everyone saw what happened. We all watched the match and what occurred in the second half. This is the most important thing. We cannot be distracted from the issue, and we have a great opportunity to take action so that it does not happen again on a football field. The matter is now in the hands of UEFA. They have been fighting a big battle in recent years, and now they have a perfect opportunity to prove that this battle is not just words, by punishing the act we experienced a few days ago and preventing it from happening again."

He added: "I don't like commenting on others' opinions, whether about José Mourinho or Kompany. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Vini scored a fantastic goal and celebrated as I have seen hundreds and hundreds of times throughout history. We cannot place the victim in the position of the provocateur. For me, this is completely unjustifiable. Nothing Vini does on the football field justifies a racist act."

About Arnold: "It's clear that he's a special player. Not only in terms of accuracy, but also the power with which he passes the ball. Most importantly, he doesn't need much time or space to send a 60 or 70-meter pass, which often gives an advantage to the attackers. This is something we focus on a lot: getting Vinicius and Mbappe to make runs, and he does that brilliantly after the break. It's not easy to return to this level, and I think he's a player who has adapted to what we need within the team. He can play in depth, on the flanks, and send crosses. The harmony between him, Valverde, and Arda is very good, and we need to continue working with him. Trent's level is clear to everyone, and I'm very happy for him."

He added, "Are you afraid that the incident of racism will go unpunished? That's not my responsibility. It's not my place to determine how UEFA should act. But I believe there should be a penalty, because it shouldn't happen again. We have a chance to set a boundary in the world of football. After that, it's up to the federation, as well as us as a society, to decide how we react to such actions. We know the passion that football ignites, but there are unacceptable things, and what we experienced last Tuesday is one of them."

Regarding Bellingham's return: "If I could sacrifice my arm to have him ready tomorrow, I would do it without hesitation. For me, Jude Bellingham is one of the best players in the world. A leader and a role model for everyone. His absence is very significant. What pleases me is that we are able to play and compete without him, and this speaks well of our squad. If I had a magic potion to bring him back now, I would use it. I have no doubts about Bellingham, quite the opposite."

He said: "Vinicius is the most targeted? I can talk about what I've experienced with Vini. What he delivers on the field since I came is amazing and brilliant, he decides matches, carries the team on his shoulders, scores wonderful goals. He is a decisive player who takes responsibility within the team. A young man who is not afraid, faces brave situations like the one that happened a few days ago, then returns to the field, I can't put myself in his place. We all face insults, but I have never been insulted because of my skin color. I don't know if I could endure what Vinicius endures. It's not the first time, and we hope it will be the last. A person must have great courage to return and play as he did. We will stand by him, defend him and with him without hesitation."

He concluded: "Rotation in central defense? Fortunately, we have five defenders in the center-back position, and we hope to have Militao back soon. I am happy that they are all in good condition. We will assess their condition in today's training before tomorrow's match and then decide. It is important to gradually reintegrate the players. Having all the players available gives me more options and variety. There will be other matches, and managing effort is important, but the most important thing for me is to fight for tomorrow's three points."
