Vincent Kompany's Statement on the Vinicius Case
The coach of the German team Bayern Munich, Vincent Kompany, delivered a very moving speech about the racism faced by Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior during his team's match against Benfica in the playoff qualifying for the Champions League round of 16.
The coach said in his statement: "It's a sensitive issue. I watched the match and it intrigued me a lot. There are two sides to this story, but when we look at the scene and Vinicius Junior's reaction, we clearly see that this is a genuine and honest reaction."
He added: "Vinicius's reaction was emotional. I don't see any benefit for him in going to the referee and placing all this burden on him. At that moment, I realized that this was the right thing to do. There's also Kylian Mbappe's reaction, who is usually diplomatic."
He continued: "There is a Benfica player who was hiding his words under his shirt on the field. We see people making obscene monkey gestures, and this is clear in the video. Additionally, José Mourinho mentioned Eusebio's name. He said that Benfica cannot be a racist club because the best player in its history is Eusebio (who has dark skin)."
He emphasized: "Do you know what Black players had to endure in the 1960s? Was he present to accompany Eusebio in all his travels? Was he a witness to the difficulties he faced? Using his name today to support statements related to Vinicius Junior..."
He concluded: "Honestly, I rarely express my opinion on what's happening, so I don't want to take sides. I've met about a hundred people who worked with José Mourinho, and I've never heard anyone speak ill of him; all his players love him. I don't need to judge him on that front. But I'm also aware of what I've heard; it's over for him, he made a mistake. We hope it won't happen again and that we can move forward together."
