Spalletti: We Took Three Steps Backward, Here's What We'll Do in the Return Leg
Juventus coach Luciano Spalletti appeared in a press statement following the 5-2 loss against Galatasaray in the first leg of the playoff qualifying for the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
The coach said in his post-match interview: "We finished the first half poorly. We tried to regain our balance and changed some things, but we regressed significantly in terms of character. This loss wasn't just one step back, but three steps back this evening."
He added: "Cambiasso was at risk of being sent off by the end of the first half, and in such matches, when you have a player with a card, it's wise to consider a substitution. However, we received two additional yellow cards in the first 15 minutes or so, and then we harmed ourselves further by not recognizing the danger of the situations."
Regarding the issue of conceding goals, especially in European competitions, he said: "I am convinced that we can relieve the pressure on the defense if we succeed in playing football. If we fall back and rely on counter-attacks, we do not have the right quality for this style, nor do we have the sufficient solidity to completely close down spaces."
He explained: "I believe that attack is the best form of defense. If our technical level falls below our standards, we are always at risk of conceding goals."
When asked about the goals conceded by the first, fourth, and fifth teams, which resulted from losing the ball during play: "I want them to play the ball under normal circumstances, but when there's a severe threat, you need to clear it. I want us to create something in attack, not just disrupt play. Not all situations are the same; sometimes you have to clear the ball to relieve pressure. I generally like building from the back, but each situation has its own specifics."
He added: "Cabral's expulsion? Playing with ten players is a difficult situation. We made the substitution to relieve pressure on a player, but the substitute received two yellow cards within 20 minutes, which made things more complicated. Apart from the cards, the whole team took several steps back today."
Regarding the return match: "Of course, we will try to climb this mountain and organize a comeback. We must take responsibility for what happened and the decisions we made during the match. From now on, there is no point in talking a lot if we don't back it up with actions. We've been doing some things well recently, but we always manage to create problems for ourselves as well."
He continued: "When it comes to reading certain situations, we were not at our best, and today made it worse. The red card increased the difficulties, but we still have to respond and fulfill our duty to the fans, the city, and the club."
Regarding Gleison Bremer's muscular injury that forced him to leave at halftime, he said: "We need to assess Bremer's condition, as he might have some issues."
