Al-Khelaifi: Florentino Perez Did Not Lose, and This Is What Joan Laporta Showed
Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the president of the European Club Association, spoke to the press following the announcement by UEFA, in collaboration with the European Club Association and the Spanish club Real Madrid, of reaching a preliminary agreement aimed at enhancing the interests of European football clubs, which signifies the end of the Super League project.
Al-Khelaifi said: "I am very proud and very happy. I would like to thank everyone and all parties involved in this historic agreement. I thank the UEFA president, who works daily for European football, the smartest and most humble leader, and of course Florentino Perez, a very elegant and intelligent man with a vision, always striving to push things forward and improve them. And if anyone says or thinks they lost today, they are a fool and know nothing at all about football."
He added: "The important thing here is that everyone won, and no one lost. Football is what won, and this is what we all wanted. The goal we all set was for the benefit of football and its fans. Today, UEFA won, Real Madrid won, and the European Club Association, which I preside over, won. The war would not have led us anywhere, and now no one will lose."
Al-Khelaifi continued his speech by saying: "I believe President Perez has become a greater and better figure today because he led Real Madrid to actions that serve European football more. I truly thank him and appreciate his trust in me. I would also like to thank Chelsea, especially Behdad Eghbali, who has been with me from the start of these negotiations."
He continued: "Joan Laporta showed great courage and leadership and deserves great appreciation. In today's final agreement, dialogue always triumphs over division. I have believed in this peace process for a long time, but until this morning we did not know whether it would happen or not. We were talking, with differences between us, but always with the will to reach an agreement, thinking of collective interests and finding common ground."
Al-Khelaifi concluded his remarks by saying: "The return of Barcelona to the European Club Association family is great news. We are now working on the full return of Real Madrid because we are all starting a new and bright chapter for club football."
