Unexpected Renewals and Early Deals Disrupt Real Madrid's Plans
Wednesday 04-02-2026
Real Madrid's management is facing increasing difficulties in strengthening the center-back position, which is a top priority alongside signing a playmaking midfielder in the upcoming transfer window.

The recent developments in the transfer market, notably Dayot Upamecano's contract renewal with Bayern Munich and Marc Guehi's move to Manchester City last January, have significantly reduced the options available to the Royal Club.

Real Madrid continues to adhere to its policy of acquiring experienced players at a low cost or on free transfers, as was the case previously with David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger. However, this strategy took a hit after the three names that were on the club's radar—Upamecano, Guehi, and Ibrahima Konate—moved out of the circle of easy opportunities.

Upamecano's renewal until 2030 with a massive contract, and Gvardiol's move to City last January, might push Liverpool to expedite their negotiations to renew Konate's contract, complicating Real Madrid's position on this matter next summer.

On the other hand, Real Madrid does not seem overly concerned, as they have promising internal alternatives. The club is anticipating Eder Militao's return to his usual form and is relying on the development of players like Raul Asensio and Dean Housen, along with the possibility of bringing back Jacobo Ramon, who is having an outstanding season with Como.

The club also pays special attention to emerging talents from the academy, particularly Juan Martinez, reflecting a belief within the corridors of "Valdebebas" that the solution for the center-back position might come from within, given the crowded and costly market.
