The Spanish club Girona is handling the return of its Moroccan player Azzedine Ounahi to competitions with caution, following his muscle injury sustained while playing with the Moroccan national team in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Ounahi joined Girona during the last summer transfer window from French club Olympique Marseille, in a deal valued at around 6 million euros, becoming one of the key players in coach Michel Sanchez's lineup.

The Jornadaperfecta website reported that Girona's management refuses to risk playing the player before ensuring his full recovery. The medical staff recommended extending the treatment period by an additional week or two to avoid any potential complications.

Based on these recommendations, Ounahi's absence from the match against Real Oviedo, scheduled for next Saturday as part of the 22nd round of the Spanish league, has been confirmed. This decision aims to maintain his physical readiness in the medium and long term.

The Moroccan international is considered an important element in Girona's midfield due to his balance between defensive and offensive roles, in addition to his ability to play in more than one position on the field.

During the 2025-2026 season, Ounahi played 10 matches with Girona, contributing to 5 goals through scoring and assisting. He scored against Athletic Bilbao, Real Oviedo, and Real Madrid, and provided two key assists against Real Oviedo and Real Sociedad.

Coach Mitchell Sanchez relied on the player in several positions, including defensive midfield, playmaking, and left wing, reflecting his technical value within the team.

It is noted that Azzedine Ounahi's market value has decreased to 10 million euros, after reaching 15 million euros in 2022, according to the "Transfermarkt" website, as he awaits a full return to his level after recovering from injury.
