Ter Stegen Decides to Leave Barcelona and Approaches Joining Girona
Friday 16-01-2026
The Spanish newspaper "Sport" confirmed that German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has decided to look for a new team during the current winter transfer window, after being benched against Racing Santander in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, which made him convinced that his chances of playing for Barcelona would be limited.

The source indicated that Marc-André ter Stegen's camp has already begun accelerating the procedures for his potential loan move to Girona, with the financial details of the deal being arranged between the two clubs. This comes amid the approval of the Spanish League Association to register the goalkeeper, especially since the departure of Dominik Livaković will free up around 300,000 euros within the salary cap.

The newspaper added that Girona may cover about 20% of Ter Stegen's high salary, while the German goalkeeper has agreed to forgo part of his earnings to facilitate the deal, as both clubs are eager to finalize the loan quickly.

This decision comes after the outstanding level demonstrated by Juan Garcia, making him one of the best goalkeepers in the world currently despite his young age of 24. This has led Ter Stegen to accept that his chances of playing regularly with Barcelona are limited.

It is expected that Ter Stegen will remain close to Catalonia, which will allow him to get the playing time he needs to maintain his position as the starting goalkeeper for the German national team in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
