Mbappé: We must help Brahim Diaz, and we must change the situation
Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé appeared at a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Monaco in the seventh round of the Champions League group stage, to be held at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
The French star said: "I would like to dedicate a word to all the victims of Córdoba. To all the families, fathers, mothers, and siblings who have lost their loved ones, we are thinking of them. Remember that there are things much more important than football."
He added: "Monaco is a team that is not going through its best period, but in Europe, they know how to hold their ground and be a high-level team. We have to play aggressively from the start, press them, and want to win in order to be among the top eight. It is an important match against a tough opponent, and we are playing at home at the Bernabéu. Everyone knows that Champions League nights at the Bernabéu give us an advantage, and we have to deliver a good performance."
Regarding the boos at the Bernabéu: "I understand the fans. Before I was a football player, I was a young person watching matches, criticizing, and expressing my opinion. I can understand the boos because they are the only way for Real Madrid supporters to express themselves. I fully understand them, but if they boo, it should be directed at the whole team, not just some players. We are all performing poorly. We have the character and strength to change that on the pitch. Real Madrid fans are angry, but I am sure they will come back to support us."
Regarding the boos directed at Vinícius Júnior: "It is not Vinícius Júnior's fault that we are not playing as we should right now. The responsibility lies with the entire team. This is the only thing I want to say to Real Madrid fans: if there is any booing, let it be directed at the whole team, and we must accept it. This is our job, and we have to change the situation. The responsibility falls on all of us. We will do it because we are Real Madrid players, and teams always go through moments like this, and we will change the situation."
He added, "What would you do if you were in Vinicius's place? I'm not Vinicius (laughs). If you want, go ahead (laughs). I'm not obligated to give advice. I'm not the right person to do so. My only responsibility is to take care of him and protect him... When he's happy, it's a different matter."
And whether he has spoken with Brahim Diaz after the Africa Cup of Nations final: "I haven't spoken directly with Brahim. I spoke with Achraf and know a bit about what happened. It's a difficult time; it's true that I have gone through tough moments with the national team—anger and frustration. But we have to keep working. This is the life of a football player. I came to Real Madrid to win titles, but we also have to think about people, about their feelings. Our goal is to help Brahim recover and support him."
He continued: "Were there problems between Alonso and the players? Where did you get the idea that there was an issue between the players and the coach? Saying that Xavi was unsuccessful is not true. He left before winning titles. In my opinion, Xavi will be a great coach. I had an excellent relationship with him. He has that passion for details, for the game. What happened has happened; it was a decision made by the club, and we have to respect it. Now we have a new coach, and this is his first professional experience. We will support him. There are things being said that are not true. Sometimes 10% of it is true and 90% is false. But it is our duty to accept that, even though sometimes something is said that is not correct. When I have the chance to speak, I do..."
He continued: "I spoke with Alonso as soon as I learned about his decision to leave. I have a good relationship with him; we talked about life matters, and I wanted to support him. It is not my place to judge whether the decision is fair or unfair. This is life, and this is the affection I have for him. I must support my new coach, Arbeloa, with the same affection I had for Xavi. This is the life of a professional football player. It is the club's decision, and we must respect it."
Regarding the team's situation after losing the Super Cup and being eliminated from the Cup: "It wasn't easy. At Real Madrid, you have to be ready for any situation and show your character. The fans are ready to support us, and we must demonstrate our abilities to them. We will fight until the end. We can compete."
He explained: "In France, reports spread saying that you traveled to the Super Cup to save Xavi's job. What do you think? Should I comment on everything French journalists say? I travel because I always want to participate in every match. I don't know if I'm playing well or not, but that's just my nature. If I get the chance to play in every game, I will seize it. We had a plan to come back in the Super Cup, but it didn't work out. Against Atlético Madrid, I felt very sad. I wasn't ready to play in the final, but the coach asked me to be there to support the team. I tried to play as best as I could. The result was not satisfactory because we didn't win, and now I have returned to fix things."
He concluded about the boos directed at Bellingham: "No one doubts Bellingham's quality. He has tremendous potential, and when he is at full fitness, he is among the best in the world. It's a difficult situation for everyone, and we can understand the fans' frustration. But they have the right to boo everyone; it's not about the quality or any single player. Our task is to change this situation. We won the league, and now we have to continue our journey in the Champions League. If the fans see that we are giving our best and playing well, they will come back to support us."
