Courtois: We Need to Improve, Mbappé's Achievement Is Great
Sunday 21-12-2025
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois appeared in press statements after the 2-0 victory over Sevilla in the seventeenth round of the Spanish league, at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Courtois said: "The most important thing is to win at home. But we need to improve our performance; we won thanks to a set piece and a penalty kick. We need to get better, but in moments like these, the most important thing is the win. We did it against Alavés, in the King's Cup, and today. In 2026, we need to improve. A one-week break might be useful for all of us to rest and improve. Obviously, it's not easy; we are fighting fiercely, and there are many injuries. But in the end, the most important thing is the victory."

He added: "I feel very good. I have been training hard every week with López and the other goalkeepers. I try to help the team; when the score was 1-0, I had to make several saves. That is my job, and I always try to give my best."

Regarding Mbappé's record that equaled Cristiano Ronaldo's tally: "It is a great achievement. He could have scored more today, but it was not meant to be. He is a very ambitious young man, leading the attack alongside Vinícius Jr., Rodrygo, and the rest of the players. Scoring 59 goals is not easy. He has great talent. Stopping him in training is difficult, but I try, and sometimes we compete fiercely. Training with the best players in the world always improves a goalkeeper's skills."

He continued: "Best wishes to all Real Madrid fans. I wish you a wonderful end of the year, and above all, health and wellness. As for us, I wish you health and wellness, and that 2026 brings titles."

He concluded about receiving the captain's armband after replacing Vinícius: "This was the first time I wore the captain's armband at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. It is always a special feeling and a great honor to be one of Real Madrid's leaders, especially at the Bernabéu. I have always dreamed of playing here, and being one of the leaders is a great source of pride. You have to dream big because it may take you further."
