Allegri: Napoli Deserved to Win, and We Need to Understand the Cause of This Flaw
AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri appeared in a press statement following the 2-0 loss to Napoli in the Italian Super Cup semi-final at the Stadio Olimpico.
The coach said after the match: "We faced a strong Napoli team, and we knew that. We could have performed better on the two goals. The match was good from both sides, but they defended better and deserved to win."
He added: "The refereeing was good, as was the entire officiating team. Our problem recently is that we have been conceding goals more easily than we should, and we need to improve. This loss should be an opportunity to rise again."
He emphasized: "We had good periods and controlled the ball reasonably well, but we needed to attack the penalty area more effectively. When you make mistakes like the one that led to the first goal, you have to defend more strongly. Conceding two goals in three consecutive matches could have been avoided, and this requires us to take a serious look to identify where the problem lies."
Regarding the possibility of returning to playing with a defensive line composed of four players: "One match cannot undo three months of work. We need to analyze things calmly, as only calmness will help us achieve our goal, which is to finish the season within the top four."
Allegri also defended his player Christopher Nkunku, despite his continued goal drought, concluding: "Nkunku fought and worked hard today, and got into good positions. He has great quality that will show over time. One goal could open the door for him, and we must continue to have confidence in him."
